Research
As a child I met my grandfather Demont W. Dabell Jr. I
also met my great grandfather Demont W. Dabell Sr. These men are my
direct ancestors.
My research will begin with the relationship between Demont Sr. and his father. There may be a number of other documents that confirm lineage but for the purpose of this research I will only try to establish the father son relationship from three independent sources.
Is Demont W. Dabell Sr. the son of Alfred William Dabell? Demont William Dabell Sr. was born on 21 Mar 1906 in Grant, Jefferson, Idaho, United States. He died on the 13th of Apr 1986 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States
1. Demont W. is listed as the son of Alfred W. and Mary Dabell on the Rigby Idaho 1910 US census. He is 4 years old which means he was born in 1906.
2. Demont W. is listed as the son of Alfred W. and Mary Dabell on the Rigby Idaho 1920 US Census. He is 13 years old which means he was born in 1907. The 1920 census was taken on the 14th of Janurary which was before Demont's birthday. He had not turned 14 yet and so his birth year would have been 1906 if the census had been taken later in the year. The 1910 US census was taken on the 9th of May. This confirms that Demont's birth month was between Janurary and May. We have the tombstone of Demont Sr which confirms his birth and death dates as well as his relationship to Mary Signe Maria Molin.
3. Demont W. is not listed as the son of Alfred W. on the 1930 US Census but he is listed as the head of house to his wife Viola. This census was taken on the 2nd of April and his age was 24 which puts his birth year in 1906. It also confirms his birth month was between Jan and April. On the same census page Alford W DeBell is recorded with his family. Is this Alfred W Dabell the father of Demont Sr. or is this a coincidence? Using the age and relationships of family members on the 1930 census we can confirm this is the same person.
On the 1920 census Alfred is 45 years old. His wife Mary is 40 years old. His daughter Verna L is 15, Demont W is 13, Willard R is 11, Martell J is 9, Jack M is 4, and Gale E is almost 2 years old. On the 1930 Census Alford W. DeBell is 56, Mary is 50 Verna L is 26, Demont is not listed because he is married but he would be 24 years old in 1930, Willard R is 21, Martell J is 19, Jack M is 14, Gale E is 12 but is now Gale A, and there is a new girl named Mary Gene, who is 5 years old.
Between the 1920 census and the 1930 census we find both parents and 5 children with the same names and same ages as in previous census records with Demont Sr.
The 1910, 1920, and 1930 US Census for Rigby Idaho confirm that Demont W. Dabell Sr. Is the son of Alfred William Dabell.
Is Alfred W. Dabell the son of Alfred kossuth Dabell?
In the 1910 and 1920 US Census Alfred William Dabells father was born in England. We need to find an Alfred Kossuth who was born in England.
Alfred William Dabell was born 21 Jan 1874 in Harrisville, Weber, Utah and died 31 Oct 1962 in Rigby, Jefferson, Idaho.
1. The 1880 US Census lists Alfred W. As the son of Alfred K and Julia Ann Dabell. He is 6 years old which puts his birth year in 1874.
2. History of Idaho, Gem of the Mountians page 797 identifies Alfred K. Dabell and Julia A Tailor as the parents of Alfred W along with Annie L and Pleasant W (and then all the other children) who are also listed on the 1880 US Census.
3. Newspaper Article "Dabells golden wedding annaversary" lists Alfred K Dabell and wife Julia Ann Tailor with children Alfred, Laura, pleasant, and so forth.
The 1880 US Census, History of Idaho, and newspaper article provide three separate and independent sources that Alfred W. Dabell is the son of Alfred Kossuth Dabell.
Is Alfred Kossuth Dabell the son of Alonzo Dabell? Alfred Kossuth Dabell was born 14 May 1852 in Radford Nottinghamshire, England and died on 1 July 1929 in Rigby Jefferson Idaho.
1. The Nov 1859 SS Vigo from liverpool to port of new york passenger manifest lists Alfred K. Dobell as the child of Alonzo and Harriett Dobell.
2. The 1870 US Census lists Alfred C. in the house of Alonzo and Harriett Bell (Debell).
